Isaac Kashdan

In Fischer's hands, a slight theoretical advantage is as good a being a Queen ahead.

{ This one from the famous Groninger Open in the year 2001. } 1. d4 { D27:
Queen's Gambit Accepted: Classical main line: 7 e4!? and 7 a4 } 1... d5 2. c4 dxc4 3. Nf3 Nf6 4. e3 e6 5. Bxc4 c5 6. Nc3 a6 7. a4 { Maybe 7. a4 isn't good
because it weakens b4. Alternatively, I can counter in the center with e4 if
black attacks on the queen side. (That's the theory I've learned.) } 7... Nc6 8. O-O b6 9. Qe2 Bb7 $2 { 9... Bb7 isn't good at all. Black's should get his king
safe by completing the development of his king side. Black should prepare to
castle with 9... Be7. } 10. Rd1 cxd4 11. exd4 Be7 $2 { 11... Be7 is too late.
Black's best move is 11... Nb4 to discourage 12. d5. } 12. d5 exd5 13. Bxd5 Qc7 14. Re1 { 14. Re1 prevents black castling. Now black's king isn't safe at
all. } 14... Kf8 { Under the circumstances, 14... Nxd5 is better. Now comes a
beautiful combination. } 15. Bxf7 Kxf7 16. Qc4+ Ke8 17. Ng5 Rf8 18. Ne6 Qc8 19. Bf4 { I didn't play 19. Nxg7+ because it appeared to have no future.
However, it is the best move. 19. Nxg7+ Kd8 20. Bf4 and black is tied in
knots. } 19... Rf7 20. Ng5 Rf8 21. Re2 $2 { This move allows the black back into the
game. Better is 21. Nge4! Nxe4 22. Nxe4. } 21... Na5 $2 { This move gives white new
chances. Instead, 21... b5 22. Qd3 Qg4 23. axb5 axb5 seems to survive. } 22. Rxe7+ $1 { A brilliant end said Fritz. Another offer! The best defender was
the Bishop on e7 so I thought, let's give it a go. I had not calculated all
the possibilities. } 22... Kxe7 { Decoy to e7. } 23. Re1+ { Now 23... Ne4 is no better.
For example, 23... Ne4 24. Rxe4+ Bxe4 25. Qxe4+ Kd8 26. Ne6+ Ke8 27. Nc7+ Kf7
28. Qd5+ Kg6 29. Qg5+ Kf7 30. Be5 Qxc7 31. Qxg7+ Ke6 32. Bxc7. } 23... Kd8 { White
calls all the shots. Now 24. Qb4 Qc5 (24... Re8?? 25. Qb6+ Kd7 26. Qd6
mate.) 25. Ne6+ Ke8 26. Nxc5+ Kf7 27. Qxb6 is crushing. } 24. Qd4+ { Now 24...
Qd7 is no good after 25. Qxb6+ Kc8 26. Qc5+ Bc6 27. Qxf8+ Qd8. } 24... Nd7 25. Ne6+ Ke8 26. Qxg7 { My threat is Nc7+ followed by Qe7 mate. } 26... Rxf4 { Forced. } 27. Nxf4+ Kd8 28. Ne6+ Ke8 { Now 29. Ng5+ Kd8 30. Nf7+ Kc7 31. Qg3+ Ne5 32. Qxe5+
Kd7 33. Qd5 mate. } 29. Qg5 Nc6 { It's over now. Black's position is so bad.
Black's Rook isn't doing a thing! } 30. Nd8+ Kf8 { Better, but still losing is
30... Nce5 31. Nxb7 Qxb7 32. Qg8+ Ke7 33. Qg7+ Kd8 34. Rxe5. } 31. Qh6+ Kg8 32. Re8+ 1-0
