Monday Night Meetings
The Huntsville Chess Club meets Monday nights at the Coffee Tree Books and Brew, 7900
Bailey Cove Rd, Suite A, across the street from Grissom High School.

for Holiday exceptions. Meetings begin at 6:00pm and end at 10:30 pm.
Both organized events and casual play are available. Registration for scheduled
events is held 6:00pm to 6:45pm. Events begin at 7:00pm. Analysis of any ongoing
e-mail games occurs from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. See our
calendar for a schedule of rated and
unrated competition. There is no charge for casual play. Memberships and entry
fees are required for some organized events.
Friday Night Meetings
HCC meets Friday nights at Brahan Springs Recreation Center from 5:30pm to
8:30pm in the Demonstration Room. The Rec Center is on Ivy Street just off
Drake Avenue adjacent to the Senior Center. Basic chess instruction is
offered each week beginning at 6:30pm. Casual play is available. No meetings
are held on Huntsville City holidays.
Membership in Huntsville Chess Club (HCC)
Annual memberships in HCC are currently $10.00 per year. This fee
supports club interests/activities, primarily scholastic instruction, in the
community. (Due to frequent email questions regarding HCC membership, it
should be noted that joining HCC is of benefit only to those within commuting
distance of HCC. Commuters are able to participate in HCC over-the-chess-board
activities, thereby benefiting from joining).
Definitions
E-mail Game Analysis - HCC plays e-mail games against other chess clubs
world-wide. Participants exchange analysis notes via e-mail during move interims,
then cast a final vote on the Club response at our Monday night meeting. Two
simultaneous games are played versus the opposing club, one as white, one as black.
No fees required.
Casual Games - Non-competitive chess games. No fees required.
30-Minute Un-rated Quads - A competitive event formulated by combining
participating players into groups of four (Quads) by skill level. Three thirty
minute games are played, one versus each other player in the Quad. The event is
not United States Chess Federation (USCF) rated.
G/29-Minute Quick Chess Quads - A competitive event formulated by combining
participating players into groups of four (Quads) by skill level. Three 29 Minute
games are played, one versus each other player in the Quad. The event is United States
Chess Federation (USCF) Quick Chess rated. Entry fee (currently $2.00) required.
Bring your chess clock!
Quick Chess - A Quick Chess event is for a person who wishes to play many games
in one day and not have the results affect his regular rating. The time controls in a
Quick Chess tournament are 10 minutes through 29 minutes per player (Game/10 -Game/29
inclusive). Sudden Death rules are used in Quick Chess events except score keeping is
not required.
5-Minute Blitz - A competitive event in which each participant plays two five
minute games (one as white, one as black) versus all other participants [A double
round robin]. Entry fee (currently $2.00) required. Bring your chess clock!
Rated Tournament - A competitive event offering an opportunity for serious
tournament chess. Typically the events last five rounds, with one game played each
Monday over a five week period. The games are USCF rated usually with a 40 move in 90
minute first time control followed by sudden death in 30 minutes. USCF membership,
HCC Membership and entry fees (typically $10.00) apply. Bring your chess clock!
Kriegspiel - A new competitive event added in 2002 in which games are played
"blindfolded". Three boards are used. Each player has a board on which his moves are
maintained and, if he chooses, his perception of the location of the opponents pieces.
The third board is maintained by the referee. Entry fee (currently $2.00) required.
