Our Huntsville Chess Club hit the road for a rematch with the Birmingham-UAB Chess Club in Birmingham 30 March 2001. This rematch was "necessary" after the inconclusive results from our previous encounter on 09 December 2000 in Huntsville. That event was the first rated match between two Alabama chess clubs. This rematch consisted of three events; one rated 45-minute game, double round robin unrated 5 minute games, and bughouse. Club honor, bragging rights, and rating points were once again at stake. Here are some pictures from the match.
Birmingham dominate the rated event by two full points out of 7 games. Huntsville troops managed to win only two games including this upset.
The table below documents the rated event.

The Birmingham-UAB CC won the team competition 55-43. On the bright side, our Huntsville Master, Charles Meidinger took individual honors by a score of 11 1/2 - 2 1/2. In a three-way tie for individual second place was Huntsville's Bill Melvin along with Birmingham's Kyle Therrell and Ozgur Aktunc at 11-3. Rick Aeria finished 10 1/2 - 3 1/2. Jonathon Knowles scored two upsets against older and stronger players. James Scheuermann upset Bill Melvin in one game.
Five teams took part in the double round robin format. As anticipated, the reigning State Bughouse Championship Team of James Scheuermann and Ozgur Aktunc from Birmingham won the event with a 7 1/2 -1/2 score. A "new" Birmingham alliance between Rick Aeria and Max Scheuermann came in close second with 6 1/2 - 1 1/2. The Hunstville Teams of "David & Goliath" (father-son team of Bill Melvin and Miles Melvin) along with the "Dream Team" (Jerry Wheeler and Bert Gower) finished 3-5 each. A Birmingham all-junior team called "2800" (Eytan Weinstein and Jonathon Knowles) finished in the cellar with an 0-8 score.
The meet was directed by Professor Steven "The Bear" Dowd who provided an excellent playing facility. Steven and his wife Lisa provided doughnuts, cookies, fruit and coffee.
A pizza lunch was hosted by Messrs. Rick Aeria, Todd Reynolds and Steve Tramell.
The Huntsville Chess Club issues a sincere thank you to the members of the Birmingham-UAB Chess Club for hosting an excellent event.
