Notes by Don Maddox

My first tournament in many years - about 20. In 1989 and 1993, I played a total of two or three games in the Amateur Team East. I thoroughly enjoyed this tournament - and I learned a few things: 1) I can play OTB chess; 2) finishing a game is very hard; and 3) like golf, you have to play regularly to keep your edge and your focus from tee to hole. I felt very good about this game until 31 Bc5, when I lost the thread of the position. I had already missed the chance to play Ba6! twice, but over the board I wasn't aware of the oversight. It didn't affect my concentration. Time was tight, and I started to waver and kick myself for 31 Bc5. Jeff defended extremely well and was gracious in victory - he reminded me how uncooperative a strong opponent can be.
