by Nicolas Sphicas
An artistic trend which uses the movement during a chess game as its central concept. The term derives from Retro meaning Return and Shah meaning King; in this case the King of the chessboard. Nicolas Sphicas has used the term Retro-Shah since 1993 to describe his painted works that express his sentiments about the metaphysical world of movement on the chessboard. He proceeds through an intuitive understanding of the game or problem position. His works represent the spiritual and intellectual energy that accumulates through the moves of the pieces about the chessboard.
